Unemployment Problem of Bangladesh
Employment is an occupation
which is productive of wealth. Unemployment is the opposite of employment. When
a man is out of any kind of work, he is said to be in a state of unemployment. It
has become a worldwide problem now. It is also a great problem in our country.
Unemployment
is a great social evil. For the peace and prosperity of social life, is
imperative that all the able-bodied persons in a society should be engaged in
one or other occupation and earn money to maintain themselves and their
families. An unemployed man has to lead a vagabond life. Life becomes a curse
and burden to him. Moreover an unemployed person has an idle brain which very
soon becomes the devil’s workshop. There goes an old saying, “An idle brain is
the workshop of devil.” An analysis of social evils shows that many of them
have unemployment at their root.
Unemployment is a worldwide
problem. No country of the world can boastfully claim that she is absolutely
free from the problem of unemployment. But no where in the world this problem
is as acute as in our country. Why is the problem so acute in our country? The
reasons are not far to seek. In the first place, our country is industrially
very backward. There are a few mills, factories and firms in our country.
Cottage industries are not in a flourishing condition. The mills and factories
that we have can give employment to a limited number of people. Secondly, our
agricultural sector can not employ a large number of people because the supply
of land is limited and insufficient for this vast population. Thirdly, our
system of education fails to give a student an independent start in life. It
has little provision for vocational training. Fourthly, our students have false
sense of dignity and prestige in being officers. They think that service is
more honourable than an independent business. So they run madly after jobs in
various govt. and non-govt. organizations. Fifthly, inequitable distribution of
natural wealth and abnormal growth rate of the population work jointly or
separately to intensify the problem in our country.
There is no magic lamp
which can solve this huge problem over night. In order to eradicate this
problem we have to mobilize all our energies to this great purpose without
wasting time. A large number of mills, factories and industries should be set
up where many of our unemployed youths will be engaged. A great change should
be brought in our education system. More importance should be given on
professional, vocational and technical education. These will open doors of
possibilities before the unemployed youths. The educated youths should change
their attitude to life. They must learn choose independent career. They can
work in agricultural field, cultivating fish, growing vegetables and rearing up
animals. More over we have to widen the path of work for our womenfolk in all
sectors. Thus we can get rid of the curse of unemployment from our society as
well as our country.
